Electrification explained

Mild hybrid

What is a mild hybrid?

A mild hybrid has a traditional combustion engine supported by a small electric motor.

How is a mild hybrid charged?

Mild hybrids are charged through energy recovered from regenerative braking, which works by capturing the energy lost during braking and storing it. You don’t have to plug a mild hybrid in.

Can mild hybrids run solely on electric power?

No, the electric motor provides support to improve the engine’s efficiency.

Plug-in hybrid

What is a plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid consists of a traditional combustion engine combined with a battery-powered electric motor.

How is a plug-in hybrid charged?

As the name indicates, a plug-in hybrid can be charged by being plugged in, as well as through regenerative braking while on the move, or the car charging the battery from the engine. This means you can leave a city on electric, then use the combustion engine for the motorway while charging the battery, ready for the drive through the next city.

Can plug-in hybrids run solely on electric power?

Yes, for short journeys. The exact mileage depends on the model.

Electric

What is an electric car?

An electric car is powered by a plug-in battery and only propelled by electric motors.

How is an electric car charged?

Electric cars are charged by being plugged in, and through regenerative braking while on the move.

How far can I drive an electric car before I need to recharge the battery?

That depends on the range of the make and model. For example, the Volvo EX40 has a range of 296 miles.

Frequently asked questions

Cost

Why is the initial price so much higher?

Electric cars are relatively new, especially compared to cars with petrol and diesel engines, and the new technology has a large amount of research and development investment behind it. The price gap is expected to shrink as technology advances.

The battery is the most expensive part of the car, and Volvo ensures all the material within their battery cells is ethically sourced and can be traced using blockchain. In 2024, they announced a ‘battery passport’ to track the origins of the raw materials used.

Production

Where are Volvo electric cars made?

Volvo’s production plants are in Gothenburg, Sweden; Ghent, Belgium; South Carolina, US; and Chengdu, Daqing and Taizhou, China.

Battery

Is there a warranty on the battery?

There’s an eight-year warranty on Volvo batteries, and also a 100,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first. The battery's integrity is thoroughly checked when the vehicle is serviced.

Does the battery get worse over time?

Battery technology has evolved hugely. Although there will be certain amounts of degradation with every battery cell, there should be no noticeable drop-off until well outside the warranty period (eight years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first).

Can the battery get recycled after use?

Yes, EV and hybrid car batteries can be recycled after use. They are safely broken down into their different components, which can be used for a number of purposes. For example, lead can be made into new batteries, and plastic can be made into battery cases or car parts. Some car batteries can be repurposed as solar storage batteries.

Charging

What type of plug do Volvo EVs use?

Volvo EVs charge using a Type 2 connector. One end is plugged into the car and the other end is plugged into a charging point (this can be at home, at work, or at a public charging point).

Can Volvo EVs use rapid chargers?

Yes. In addition to a Type 2 connector, Volvo EVs come with a CCS connector for rapid charging.

How much does it cost to charge an EV?

The cost of charging an EV can vary depending on a number of factors. If you do most of your charging at home then it can be cheaper to run an EV than a traditional petrol or diesel car, especially if you do this overnight when it costs less.

If you charge it at home using a home wallbox charger, the cost will be affected by:

  • The cost of buying and installing the home wallbox charger. This is a one-off cost and is safer and more energy efficient than using a domestic plug socket.
  • Your energy tariff. Some tariffs are specifically for EV drivers and offer reduced prices during off-peak hours, such as overnight, so you can charge your car for less.
  • The size of your car’s battery. The larger the battery, the more electricity is needed to fully charge it.

At public charging points, the cost will be affected by:

  • The size of your car’s battery. A larger battery takes longer to charge.
  • The battery’s capacity. The more miles you can travel per kWh charged, the less it will cost.
  • The network available and how much they charge for electricity. This is very similar to how petrol stations set their own charges.
  • The location of the public charging point. Motorway service station charging points are often the most expensive and can have time limits, but there also tends to be more charging points available.

What's the infrastructure of public charging where I live?

ZapMap has a mobile app and a web map that will tell you what chargers are nearby, which ones are private or public, and whether any are out of order.

Range

What affects the range of an EV?

  • Battery size – generally, the bigger the battery, the further the EV can travel on a single charge. Battery size is measured in kWh.
  • Vehicle size – bigger cars weigh more and so they require more energy to pull away and accelerate. Large tyres can also affect the range, as they create more resistance and so require more energy to keep the car moving.
  • Outside temperatures – very cold and very hot temperatures can reduce range. When it’s cold, the car uses more heat to keep the interior at a comfortable temperature, whereas when it’s hot the car uses air conditioning for the same purpose – both these actions require more energy.
  • Driving style – accelerate gently and use regenerative braking to get closer to the published range figures.

Fuel type

What are the differences between an EV and a hybrid?

An EV is a vehicle that runs purely off a battery, whereas a hybrid runs off a combustion engine and also a battery.

Does a hybrid make more sense for me?

A hybrid is a great stepping stone to an electric car. For short journeys into/around town, you may want to reserve your fuel levels and run your car using the battery, but use petrol for longer journeys, whilst charging the battery. Daily use will give you a great idea of the principles of charging and whether you would like to take the next step to a full EV.

The environment

What is the environmental impact of electric and hybrid cars?

An electric car produces no carbon emissions, and you’ll reduce your carbon footprint more if you charge the battery using renewable electricity. Hybrid cars produce some emissions, but they consume less fuel than traditional petrol and diesel cars because of the electric motor.

Clean Air Zones

What are Clean Air Zones?

A Clean Air Zone is an area where drivers of vehicles that don’t meet the emissions standards must pay to drive. There are four Clean Air Zone classes.

  • Class A: Buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles
  • Class B: Buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles
  • Class C: Buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, vans, minibuses
  • Class D: Buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, vans, minibuses, cars, motorcycles if the local authority decides to include them

  • Ultra-low emission
  • Registered as a disabled tax class or disabled passenger tax class vehicle
  • Registered as a military vehicle
  • Registered as a historic vehicle
  • Retrofitted with CVRAS-approved technology (CVRAS stands for Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme)
  • Some types of agricultural vehicle

What should businesses managing multiple vehicles do about Clean Air Zones?

Businesses operating two or more UK-registered vehicles can set up a Clean Air Zone account to manage payments more efficiently. Once registered, you can:

  • Upload multiple number plates via spreadsheet, or enter them individually
  • View charges for each vehicle in each zone
  • Add and remove vehicles from your fleet
  • Invite up to 10 users to help manage the account
  • Set up direct debit payments
  • Access maps and zone information
  • Check for vehicle-specific exemptions

To register, you need to provide your company name and a valid email address.

What is the Zero Emission Zone?

The Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) is a scheme operating in Oxford. Fully electric vehicles (as well as those that qualify for exemption) can be used without charge, but petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles are subject to a daily charge if they drive in the ZEZ between 7am and 7pm. Some vehicles are eligible for a discount, which should be applied for in advance.

What is the Low Emission Zone?

The Low Emission Zone covers most of Greater London. It is different from ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone), which operates in the same area but has stricter standards. The LEZ focuses on vehicles that cause heavier pollution, like lorries, buses and coaches, while ULEZ applies to most vehicles. Both zones have a daily charge for vehicles that don’t meet their standards.
