There’s plenty of assistance technology, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, intelligent speed limit assist, and traffic sign recognition. Run-off-road mitigation senses if the car is going to go into a verge and adjusts the brakes and steering to stop it. Some versions also feature parking sensors, a rear camera and proximity sensors.

Inside the cabin you’ll find lots of room front and back, plus an average boot size for the XC40’s class (which is still big). Size varies depending on the generation, but you’re looking at 440 and 452 litres of space.

What engines are available?

From 2024, Volvo has offered two mild-hybrid petrol engines for the XC40: the B3 and B4. They each use an electric motor to boost efficiency, but can’t use electricity alone the way fully electric cars do. (Speaking of, the XC40’s electric engine was renamed from the Volvo XC40 Recharge to the Volvo EX40 in early 2024.)

Previous iterations of the XC40 included traditional petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), so expect to see these on the used car market as well.
