One of the largest mid-sized SUVs on the market, the XC60 quickly became a popular addition to Volvo’s line-up, selling well even when the second generation of the XC60 was released.

We might be used to high-tech safety features by now, but they were a revelation in the 2000s — and the XC60 was equipped from the start. Even the very first model had an emergency braking system, blind spot warnings, multiple airbags and cruise control.

There’s lots of room for the driver and passengers inside, plus plenty of storage space in the boot (around 483 to 495 litres depending on the generation, and even more if you fold down the back seats). The level of luxury will depend on which trim your used model has, but expect 18-inch alloy wheels and leather upholstery no matter which one you choose.

What engines are available?

Initially the XC60 was sold with petrol and diesel engines, with mild hybrid technology introduced from 2017. There are three mild-hybrid engines a used model could have: the B4, B5, or B6. The B4 has the best fuel economy, at 44.1 mpg.
