Volvo’s first SUV, the XC90 was launched in 2002 with a mission to correct some of the biggest complaints about SUVs, including fuel efficiency and drive quality.
With three rows of seats and room for plenty of luggage, the XC90 quickly became an example of how the safety and practicality of a seven-seater family car doesn’t mean compromising on comfort.
The first generation barely changed over the years, aside from a few tweaks, thanks to its strong start — there was a consistent market for a luxurious and roomy SUV.
Later versions have a simple nine-inch dashboard, infotainment with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and safety features like lane keeping assist. Some models come with infrared headlights, which allow you to see five times further than you usually would with a standard dipped beam, without dazzling other drivers.
The XC90 was once available with a variety of petrol and diesel engines. However, newer models only have two engines available: the B5 and the T8. Both are plug-in hybrid petrol engines.
