Top Tips for Driving in a Storm

As storm season rolls in, road safety should be every driver’s top priority. At Waylands, we know how unpredictable weather can turn a routine trip into a risky one. Whether you’re commuting to work or heading out on a weekend drive, these expert tips will help you stay safe - and keep your car performing its best.

1. Slow Down and Keep Your Distance

Rain reduces tyre grip and lengthens stopping distances. Drive slower than usual and leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead - at least double the normal distance.

If your tyres are showing signs of wear, book a quick tread check at your nearest Waylands site.

2. Use Your Lights Correctly

Turn on your dipped headlights to stay visible, but avoid using hazard lights unless you’re stationary. Good visibility helps you see, and be seen in heavy rain.

3. Avoid Deep Water

Flooded roads can be deceiving. Even shallow water can cause your car to stall or lose traction. If in doubt, turn around and find a safer route.

Check your wipers and washer fluid before heading out - visibility is key when spray from passing vehicles adds to the storm.

4. Watch for Aquaplaning

If your steering suddenly feels light, you may be aquaplaning. Ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel straight, and avoid braking sharply until your tyres regain grip.

5. Be Wind-Wise

Strong winds can push your vehicle off course, particularly when overtaking high-sided vehicles or crossing open areas. Keep both hands on the wheel and be prepared for sudden gusts.

6. Stay Informed

Before you set off, check local weather and traffic alerts. If conditions are severe, it’s best to delay your trip. Safety always comes first.

7. Be Prepared

Keep an emergency kit in your car - including a torch, phone charger, high-visibility jacket, blanket, and bottled water. It’s always better to have it and not need it.

Drive Smart, Stay Safe

Stormy conditions can test even the most experienced driver. By preparing your car and adjusting your driving style, you can stay safe and confident on the road.
