New name, new me: say hello to the EX40 and EC40!

We’re streamlining and standardising our model names for fully electric cars, which means the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will get a new nameplate going forward.

Why the change? Well, it's all part of our commitment to becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030. We're simplifying things for you, so you can easily identify our electric models. As of today, our pure electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will be renamed to EX40 and EC40. With these new nameplates, our electric stalwarts now seamlessly fit with our other fully electric (EV) models: the EX30, the EX90 and the EM90.

The Recharge badge isn’t just removed from the EX40 and EC40. Going forward, Recharge is also cut from our highly popular plug-in hybrid models, which are now denoted simply by the T6 or T8 suffix indicating different levels of power output. The XC40 name remains for internal combustion-powered variants of the model.

This change makes it even easier for you to understand which models are fully electric and which are hybrids as you shop for your next Volvo car.

“By aligning our trailblazing first electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we simplify choice for consumers as we continue to electrify our line-up and refresh our hybrids.”

“Our future is electric and we are moving at pace towards our 2030 ambition,” says Björn Annwall our chief commercial officer and deputy CEO. “By aligning our trailblazing first electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we simplify choice for consumers as we continue to electrify our line-up and refresh our hybrids.”
